Can the forbidden heal you?
Hazel Duval has finally left her traumatic past behind her... or so she believes.
She and her husband Oren have settled into the oceanside town of Conch Garden, and now Hazel's won her dream job playing violin with the local orchestra. She's even made a new friend—a friend who turns out to be a little more than she bargained for.
Beautiful, brilliant, and wild, Claire makes love to the sand with her toes, curses like a sailor, and makes a cello sing like nothing Hazel has ever heard. She also listens to Hazel's most painful secrets without judgment or expectation.
It isn't long before Hazel finds herself thinking about Claire in ways she's never thought of another woman. Fantasizing. Wanting. Longing.
But Hazel is married, and so is Claire. Indulging in this fantasy is not an option. Still, there is no denying that her feelings for Claire have awakened something primal in her—for the first time in her life, Hazel feels alive. And now the two women are flying off to Italy to perform at a music festival, where they'll be sharing an apartment.
Alone.
As their friendship deepens, Hazel learns from Claire that there is more than one type of love, and that salvation comes in many forms.
But is Hazel's relationship with Claire really saving her, or is it only leading to the inevitable destruction of the life she's worked so hard to build?
A love story that defies categorization, Beyond the Break will take you on a journey that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about friendship, sexuality, and love. If you enjoyed Carol by Patricia Highsmith or The Gravity Between Us by Kristen Zimmer, you'll love Beyond the Break.

This book broke my heart, but probably not for the reasons you think. You see, I am LGBT, and while this book is fantastically written with a solid plot, polished writing, and deep character development, there are elements to this story that speak to people like me in a way that makes me feel defeated that a love we call normal can be so callously cast aside as an insignificant, illicit, and dirty affair. Let me explain:It's clear that Hazel and Claire are, at bare minimum, bisexual. There is none of that straight girl shame or hesitancy of touching another woman. That being said, their affair is the quintessential cliche of a bi-woman gallivanting off with another woman, but ditching the relationship to go back to her man. This is one of the most difficult stereotypes that bisexuals have to overcome with the gay and straight communities depending on the day. That bi's cannot be monogamous and devoted to a partner without needing to "scratch the proverbial itch" and satisfy the need to be with the opposite gender of their partner. That is NOT how it works and it's a gross misrepresentation of bisexuality by and large.
Both husbands have given their permission to Hazel and Claire. Their reasons are weak and pathetic. Hazel's husband totally disregards her past trauma to satisfy his manly needs, even admits it. Claire's husband assuages his own trauma (trauma they both share) by taking advantage of their open relationship to drown his sorrows in another woman. Both of them are pathetic and selfish douchebags.
Hazel and Claire's affair reaches a crescendo and they both realize their affair is much more than they bargained for. Falling in love has become a glorious journey in a hopelessly romantic venue such as Italy. The ending tore me to pieces because it was a love that was not allowed nor, heaven forbid, acceptable to either of them as an option. So, their love is not worthy of fighting for? Ouch. This is exactly the crux of the nightmare we put up with from the straight community in entertainment. It is absolutely heartbreaking to witness, yet again, that love like ours is to be deemed so cheaply and unacceptable. I hope this author takes note to how badly she represents people like me. I am not offended in so much as I am heartbroken to have to read crap like this, yet again.
I want to add one very important point. This book is categorized as "Lesbian fiction" which is a total farce. In actual lesbian fiction the girl always gets the girl in the end. Happy endings are the norm and not the exception, let alone treated as a dirty affair to hide in shame. This book degrades people like me to its very core.

Beyond the Break Conch Garden Book 1 edition by Kristen Mae Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I finished this book a few days ago and wanted to marinade a little to sort out my thoughts. This book is complex emotionally and not my usual cuppa and I feel a little guilty (okay not) having enjoyed it so much. One of the themes running throughout was the futility of stopping a fateful and gifted pairing-- one that could go so wrong or so right, but presented an opportunity. In this case to heal and resurrect an alternately guarded to exquisitely vulnerable Hazel on several fronts (love, lust, music, trust). The fun part was taking in the description of how a slam dunk, out of nowhere CRUSH can truly be an existential crisis of epic proportions ... but sadly, as in real life, usually just to one of the participants. Still an altogether sweet, rich, unique journey that positively shifted the direction of all involved. Beyond the Break is an apt title as all this occurs after conventionality is an unrealistic goal but some measure of happiness (laced with ecstasy, and angst) isn't. This is the first novel I've read by this author and I'm looking forward to much, much more! xo
Hmmm. This is a serious work of writing. I have no qualms about the grammar, pace, narrative, characters, spelling, etc. So, let's go to the next level (after saying that, I loved reading this book, again and again).
First off, Hazel could obviously use some medication or therapy to help her deal with her PTSD and anxiety. 90% of the book seems devoted to her episodes of such and yet no one ever suggests that she get professional help, which she obviously needs. Everyone, including Hazel, admits that something is wrong with her, understandably. But instead, she's left alone to manage it with running, and playing violin, and sex with Claire.
Secondly, this narrative probably makes more sense to bisexuals than lesbians. In this story, the bisexual women naturally return to their heteronormative male partners primarily out of a need for societal and cultural acceptance and security, and a sense of misplaced obligation and guilt. This means they demean and dismiss their extreme emotional and physical connection with each other in favor of a more accepted, if depleted, life. Claire and Hazel love each other, deeply, sexually, emotionally. But they turn away from that in submission to a commitment they made before they knew of their far more fulfilling bisexuality. To a lesbian, it's a no brainer; dump the guys. Be happy. (FYI, I'm a lesbian. )
Thirdly, I'd really like to see a third installment of this series where the characters could come together and live happily ever after. Because it's really disappointing, otherwise. But it is fun to read all this great sex between women (and disgusting, tho mildly interesting, to read the heterosexual sex; is that really how they do it?)
Good writing; hot sex; interesting story.
Great story. Started out slow for me but once it picked up I could not put it down. As a lesbian, I had no problem with the idea that two women in straight marriages could have this kind of connection. I think love comes out of the blue and often does not take the form you think it should. Plus, women's sexuality can be quite fluid. I also thought it was realistic, and honorable, for both women to want to honor their marital vows and try to make their marriages work (even if that is not always realistic). Really well done overall. I love that it was not wrapped up nicely into a bow at the end. Life is messy and the there is clearly more to the story of these two. I would read a follow up to this story to see how things unfold a little bit further down the road.
